Wig Subsidy for Medical Hair Loss
If you're experiencing hair loss due to medical reasons like cancer treatment, alopecia, or other conditions, you may be eligible for financial assistance through the Wigs and Hairpieces Service Payment from the Ministry of Health.
Am I Eligible?
To be eligible for the Wigs and Hairpieces Service Payment, you must:
- Be a New Zealand citizen or resident
- Have a current medical certificate from your specialist or GP
- The certificate must include your NHI number and details of your hair loss condition
- Hair loss must be due to a medical condition (e.g. cancer treatment, alopecia, burns, or other medical causes)
Subsidy Entitlement Amounts
The entitlement period begins with your first purchase. You can claim all or part of your entitlement at any time within the period.
Cancer treatment, chemotherapy, etc.
Adults (18+) with temporary hair loss
$408.88
over 1 year
Alopecia, scarring, etc.
Adults (18+) with permanent hair loss
$2,330.66
over 9 years
Temporary or permanent
Children (under 18) with any hair loss
$1,226.65
over 3 years (or until age 18)
ACC: If your hair loss is caused by an accident or burns, ACC may cover the cost. As an Approved Wig Provider for ACC, we can quote directly on your behalf.

Your specialist or GP provides a medical certificate with your NHI number, detailing your hair loss condition and whether it is permanent or temporary.

Visit us at our Auckland salon for a private, no-obligation consultation. We'll help you find the perfect wig or hairpiece for your needs.
Choose Your Wig
Select from our range of synthetic and human hair options. We have synthetic wigs priced within the subsidy amount, so there may be no extra cost to you.
We Handle the Paperwork
As an Approved Wig Provider, we submit the subsidy claim to the Ministry of Health on your behalf, free of charge. You don't have to worry about a thing.
Wigs at No Extra Cost
We carry a range of quality synthetic wigs priced within the Ministry of Health subsidy amount, meaning there may be no additional cost to you. We also offer premium human hair wigs that you can put your subsidy amount towards.
